Welcome to Champdoré
Fishing Camp, located on Lac Champdoré, the headwaters of
the Whale River (Rivière Baleine). By floatplane we are 90
miles northeast of Schefferville, Québec, an old iron-ore
mining town which straddles the northern Labrador-Québec
border. Situated 900 miles north of Montreal deep in the Canadian
wilderness, Champdoré offers a truly amazing freshwater
fishery combined with a unique camp and staff. Champdoré is unquestionably one
of the worlds greatest fly-fishing and shallow-water angling
areas. We are blessed with both large and abundant fish, as well as
the sheer variety of fish, i.e.,
Lake Trout, Brook Trout, Ouananiche (landlocked Atlantic Salmon)
and Northern Pike.
Champdoré is open for
fishing during July and August. Although fishing at Champdoré is
excellent during the middle of June, we are unable start
the fishing season this early. This is because ice-out in
northern Québec
does not occur until mid-June, and therefore the floatplane
fleet is not moved into the Schefferville area until late
June. As we routinely need about a week in camp for preparations,
our first full week of fishing
does not start until the
beginning of July.
We specialize primarily in shallow-water
fishing, but we also provide caribou hunting opportunities.
The caribou season officially opens on August 1 and closes October
1, but we confine our caribou hunting to the last 5 to 6 weeks
of the season. The George River herd of caribou routinely migrates
through the Lac Champdoré area during the middle to late
summer, and the wildlife biologists tell us that this herd is
made up of about 800,000 animals.
