Lac
Champdoré, a large lake (30 miles long and up to 6 miles
wide) located 20 miles from the tree line, is the primary source of
the Whale River. The Whale, which flows north into Ungava Bay, is a
relatively wide river that for the most part is quite shallow. Our
main camp is located on Lac Champdoré, near the impassable
1st rapids and mouth of the Whale River. In addition, we
have two outpost camps. One outpost camp is located 6-8 miles
downstream on the Whale near the impassable 3rd rapids.
The other outpost camp is located 30 miles up the lake near the
narrows that connects Lac Champdoré with Lac Tudor. From
these 3 camps we have access to numerous and extensive fast water
and white-water rapids which tend to concentrate the various fish
populations. Camp Champdoré is limited to 6
guests per week so as to ensure the best possible fishing
experience for all. We practice "catch and release", except for the
few small fish that are kept for shore lunches. Furthermore, we
only allow lures and flies with single barbless hooks. "Catch and
release" and the use of single barbless hooks ensures that Camp
Champdoré will be as unspoiled and prolific a fishery 20
years from now as it is today.
The staff at Champdoré consists of an
American host (Bill Hylander), and
the Gabriels, a Montagnais family who have called this remote
territory home for hundreds of years. While our new accommodations
are quite comfortable, by its very nature this can be a very rough
environment. At Champdoré we intend to do everything in our
power to put you on superb fishing during your entire visit, while
sharing with you an intense wilderness experience. This will never
be a luxurious lodge, or a bug-free environment, and we
wouldnt want it to be. We have an unusually large number of
boats and motors for such a small camp, even though most of our
fishing is done while wading. The boats are needed mainly for
transportation to the narrows at the upper end of the lake or
traveling between the five different sets of impassable rapids in
the river. In both instances the goal is to reach remote areas
because of the incredible fishing these areas offer and because we
don't want to pressure any one area too much. Although beds and
mattresses are provided, we have no laundry facilities, and hence
the need for sleeping bags. For purposes of safety, floatplane
weight loads are severely restricted. You are limited to 50 lbs.
of gear per person, although you can bring in as much as you like
if you are willing to pay for the extra flights. Furthermore, the
entire camp can also be reserved if you are willing to pay for a
regular capacity week (6 guests).
